Stump Grinding

Once a tree comes down, the stump is often left behind — and it can be surprisingly stubborn. Stumps are unsightly, get in the way of landscaping, and can become a trip hazard or a home for pests and fungi. At Acorn Arbor, we grind stumps out across Sydney's North Shore and Northern Beaches, clearing the way for you to replant, pave, turf or simply tidy up the space.

A complete start-to-finish removal with nothing wasted. We safely took the tree down, split and stacked the large timber for firewood, mulched the branches and spread them through the garden, then ground out the stump — removing the trip hazard and clearing the way for grass to grow back.

Why grind a stump?

Leaving a stump in the ground causes more problems than people expect. It takes up usable garden space, makes mowing and landscaping awkward, and can sprout new growth if the tree is still alive at the roots. Old stumps also attract termites, borers and decay fungi, which you don't want close to the house. Grinding removes the stump cleanly and lets you get on with whatever you'd like to do with the space.

How stump grinding works

Rather than digging a stump out — which is heavy, disruptive work that tears up the surrounding ground — we use a stump grinder to chip it away below ground level. This leaves the area clear and level, with the stump reduced to wood chips that can be removed or used as mulch. It's faster, cleaner and far less invasive than excavation, and works even in tighter garden settings.

Clean and tidy

We grind the stump down, rake back the area and clean up thoroughly. You're left with a clear, level patch ready to plant, pave or turf — and the grindings can be left as mulch or taken away, whichever you prefer.
