Tree Pruning
Tree pruning is one of the most skilled parts of arboriculture. Done well, it improves a tree's health, structure, safety and appearance. Done poorly, it can cause lasting damage and decay. At Acorn Arbor, we prune trees across Sydney's North Shore and Northern Beaches using correct, science-based techniques that work with the tree, not against it.
There are a few good reasons to prune. Removing dead, damaged or crossing branches improves the tree's health and reduces risk. Thinning the canopy can let more light into your garden and reduce wind resistance. Raising the canopy clears space over paths, driveways and roofs. And formative pruning on younger trees sets them up with strong, sound structure for the decades ahead. The key is knowing what to cut and what to leave.
Why prune a tree?
Pruning done properly
This tree's lower branches were hanging out over the driveway, where passing bin trucks were catching and tearing at them. We raised the canopy to give clean clearance, took out a crossing branch to improve its long-term structure, and removed the deadwood throughout. The result is a healthier, better-shaped tree with the driveway clear and protected.
Every cut we make is deliberate. We prune at the branch collar so the tree can seal the wound naturally, and we never remove more living growth than a tree can safely handle. We avoid outdated practices like topping, which stresses the tree and creates weak, hazardous regrowth. Our approach follows Australian pruning standards, so your trees stay healthy and structurally sound long after we leave.
Safe, clean and fully insured
Pruning often means working at height with sharp tools, so safety is paramount. We're fully insured and qualified, and we take every precaution on site. When we're done, we clean up thoroughly — all offcuts and debris are removed, leaving your garden tidy.
